Four Serious Errors to Avoid After Your Truck Collision

When you’ve been injured in a truck collision, there are many things you should do, such as collecting contact information from the truck driver, and taking pictures at the scene. However, it’s just as important that you know what not to do.

We strongly encourage you to avoid:

  • Failing to contact the police. If you don’t call the police, the insurance company may argue that you were at fault for the accident, or even claim that the collision never actually occurred. You should contact the police immediately after the accident, and insist that all of the collision details be documented.
  • Talking about the accident. When you discuss your accident, you may inadvertently say things that damage your claim. Anything you say can be misconstrued and used against you. If the insurance adjuster contacts you about the accident, tell him to speak with your attorney. Similarly, you should avoid posting about the accident or your injuries on social media.
  • Failing to seek medical treatment. Some truck accident victims don’t visit the doctor right away because they don’t believe they were seriously injured. This puts both their health and their claim in jeopardy. Untreated injuries can lead to serious health complications, and failing to see a doctor allows the insurance company to argue that your injuries aren’t as serious as you claim. Even if you don’t think you’re hurt, you should visit your doctor as soon as possible just to be sure.
  • Not hiring an attorney. Many truck accident victims fail to hire an attorney right after their collision. This is a big mistake, because you need an attorney to investigate the accident and preserve evidence that is vital to your claim. Hiring an experienced attorney is the smartest move you can make to ensure that you receive the compensation you deserve.
