We always hear about certain causes being highlighted during specific months—like October being Breast Cancer Awareness month—and, as car accident attorneys, one of these causes is very near and dear to our hearts this month: distracted driving awareness.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and organizations throughout the country are trying to draw attention to the serious dangerous of driving while distracted by cell phones, electronic devices, passengers in the vehicle, and other things that take a driver’s full attention away from the road.

One of the main organizations that takes a stand against distracted driving is the U.S. government. It has a dedicated website, www.distraction.org, that targets distracted driving and ways to prevent it. Some of the more recent additions to their website target younger people specifically, including the 3rd annual distracted driving video competition called Project Yellow Light. This scholarship competition is in partnership with the Ad Council, National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, and National Organizations for Youth Safety. There are individual categories for high school and college students who are instructed to create a video that will motivate, persuade and encourage their peers not to drive while distracted. The winner receives a $5,000 scholarship, and their video will be turned into an Ad Council PSA.

It’s great to see such major organizations taking a stand against distracted driving. Do you know of any local groups that are participating in Distracted Driving Awareness month in the Houston area? Please share the information with us in the comments section of this blog!
