Office Workers Who Use Standings Desks May Reap Health Benefits

Many employees sit at their desks throughout the day, without giving much thought to the health consequences of such a sedentary lifestyle. Sitting for extended periods of time increases the risk of health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Sitting Throughout the Day Is Unhealthy

While physical exercise is certainly helpful, stopping by the gym on the way home from work isn’t sufficient to counter the negative health effects of sitting for eight hours per day. Sitting for short periods of time generally isn’t a problem, but remaining seated for an extended period can lead to serious health risks.

For instance:

  • Sitting for prolonged periods of time slows the metabolism, reduces fat-burning, and increases the risk of obesity.
  • Just two hours per day spent sitting in front of a computer can double the risk of a heart attack.
  • Sitting for long periods of time raises the relative risk of type 2 diabetes over 100 percent.
  • Sitting at a computer four hours per day increases the risk of death from any cause by 50 percent.

Using Standing Desks

Many employers discovered that providing standing desks for their workers is an easy way to encourage moderate physical activity and improve employee health. Office workers may not have an opportunity to take frequent movement breaks, but standing desks allow employees to stand and work at the same time. Alternating between sitting and standing throughout the workday allows employees to avoid remaining in either position for too long.

Workers’ Compensation

Illnesses and injuries stemming from a sedentary workplace environment can lead to workers’ compensation claims. If you’ve been hurt due to sitting at your desk for extended periods of time, you’re entitled to compensation for your medical bills and lost income.
