If you were recently injured in a maritime accident, you may be extremely upset with various safety regulations and how things were handled following the incident—and rightfully so. There are many ways in which our nation's maritime safety laws can be vastly improved, and unfortunately, it may take accidents like yours to push certain measures forward. However, the individuals and groups behind these laws do still work hard to continually improve maritime and offshore regulations and a recent improvement was announced just this summer.

July 2014 Amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS)

The SOLAS Convention is considered to be one of the most important international treaties concerning the safety of merchant ships. The very first version came about in 1914 following the sinking of the Titanic. Effective July 1, 2014, some changes have been made to ensure that all ships are able to effectively serve as a rescue asset and have the proper equipment for rescuing people from the water and from a survival craft. Two big changes are:

  • New ships need to be constructed in a way that reduces on-board noise and to protect personnel from noise-related injuries.
  • There needs to be a minimum of two two-way portable radiotelephone devices available for communication in the event of a fire.
