Pedestrian Accidents With Motorcycles

Many different types of vehicles must share the road, and all vehicle operators have a responsibility to look out for those who are the most vulnerable: pedestrians. While motorcycles are smaller and lighter than most other types of vehicles, the consequences of a collision with a pedestrian are frequently catastrophic. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 5,376 traffic-related pedestrian fatalities during 2015.

Pedestrian Injuries

In addition to suffering injuries when he is struck by a motorcycle, a pedestrian may be further injured when he hits the ground or another object as a result of the collision. Injuries to pedestrians struck by motorcycles often include:

  • Bruises
  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Internal injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Brain injuries
  • Death

Causes of Pedestrian Injuries

Most collisions between motorcycles and pedestrians are caused by rider error. Some of the most common accident causes include:

  • Turning through a crosswalk without looking.
  • Failing to stop completely at intersections.
  • Failure to yield.
  • Running a red light.
  • Speeding.
  • Illegal U-Turns.

Duty of Care

Since pedestrians are particularly vulnerable to serious injury resulting from a vehicle accident, motorcyclists have a higher duty of care when pedestrians are present. Riders should always be aware of their surroundings, obey speed limits, and be particularly careful when making turns in cities. Motorcyclists have an even greater duty of care toward children, since they are the demographic most vulnerable to being struck by a vehicle. Children between the ages of five and nine are at the greatest risk of being hit by a motorcycle. Riders should exercise extreme caution around school zones, parks, playgrounds, and any other places frequented by children.

You Need an Attorney

Motorcycles are highly maneuverable, and riders are sometimes overly confident in their own abilities. If you’ve been injured due to a motorcyclist’s negligence, you deserve compensation. To learn more, contact the law offices of Steve M. Lee, P.C., by clicking the Live Chat button on this page.
