As kids go back to school and families return home from vacation, we become faced with the reality that Labor Day weekend, the unofficial "end" of summer is here. The holiday technically kicked off last night at 6:00 p.m. as Houston residents took off for parties, barbeques, and road trips for the three-day weekend; it ends this coming Monday, September 1, at 11:59 p.m. We know Labor Day is a time to relax, have fun, and enjoy the company of friends and family, but it is also a time to make sure you are being responsible and safe.

According to data collected by the National Safety Council, there could be approximately 400 fatalities and over 40,000 injuries on our nation's highways this weekend. Accidents generally increase over holiday weekends due to an increase in vehicles on the road, speeding and aggressive driving because of the extra traffic, people driving after having one too many alcoholic beverages, and different types of distractions that prevent the driver from focusing on what they are supposed to be doing.

How Can You Avoid Being in a Car Accident This Labor Day?

If you do not have any big plans, you may want to stay off the roads as often as you can. We do understand, however, that many of you may be taking road trips or have different events lined up to attend throughout the weekend. If that is the case, do everything you can to be a responsible driver:

  • Drive distraction-free.
  • Avoid speeding or driving recklessly. If there are individuals around you on the road who are engaging in these behaviors, do not become aggressive with them. Try to stay away from their vehicles because they are the people that cause accidents.
  • Make sure everyone in your car has their seat belt on. Seat belts save lives.
  • Give yourself plenty of travel time so you do not feel the need to speed.
  • Never drive drunk. If you know you are going to be drinking, make plans ahead of time for how you will be getting home.

The staff at our Houston law office wishes you a very happy Labor Day weekend! Please stay safe and use good judgment as you enjoy yourself. And if you know someone who is traveling this Labor Day weekend, please share this article with them!
