Football Season Vehicle Collisions

Football, like most things, is bigger in Texas. We love our games, and we love our football parties. Whether it’s a small tailgating party outside the stadium or a large gathering at home, alcoholic beverages are typically part of the celebration. Unfortunately, overconsumption of alcohol can lead to an increase in drunk driving.

Drunk Driving During Football Season

Games can last for several hours, which makes it easy for fans to drink too much when they get caught up in the game. Drunk driving is a serious problem in Texas, with 987 Texans losing their lives due to drunk driving incidents during 2016. To combat drunk driving during football season, the Texas Department of Transportation has launched a campaign called Plan While You Can. This effort is intended to encourage football fans to arrange safe transportation home before the party starts.

Avoiding Drunk Driving Accidents

While you shouldn’t allow the fear of becoming the victim of a drunk driving accident prevent you from tailgating or attending a football party, there are a couple of precautions you can take to stay safe:

  • Go home early. If the game isn’t close, consider missing the last few minutes so you can go home a little early. Beating the post-game rush means less traffic on the road as you’re driving home, and decreased risk of encountering a drunk driver.
  • Stay in the right lane. Since collisions often occur when drunk drivers drift out of their lanes or into oncoming traffic, staying in the right lane could save your life. Driving as far to the right side of the road as possible minimizes your risk of being sideswiped or involved in a head-on collision.

You Need an Attorney

If you’ve been injured due to the reckless behavior of a drunk driver, you’re entitled to pursue damages for your medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering. You need an attorney who is prepared to fight for the compensation you deserve.
