What to Expect From Brain Herniation Caused by a Truck Crash

When a truck collides into another vehicle, it has the potential to cause serious harm to the vehicle’s passengers due to its weight and size. In particular, truck crashes are notorious for causing brain damage that can range from moderate to severe.

Your brain, arguably the most important part of your body, is remarkably fragile. To protect the delicate tissues of the organ, the body encases it within a quarter-inch of bone—your skull. The skull dutifully contains the brain, shielding it against danger and doing everything it can to keep it safe. However, this protective shell can sometimes also dangerously constrict the brain, causing brain herniation.

Compressing a Swollen Brain

Unlike other organs, when the brain swells, there’s no room for it to expand. Instead, it conforms to the inside of the skull and forcefully presses against it. This pressure against the unyielding barrier of the skull can cause damage to the tissue. This is called brain herniation and can be caused by a traumatic brain injury from a truck impact.

If doctors aren’t able to resolve the problem in time, permanent and devastating brain damage can occur. The damage may result in death or a lifetime of therapy. In many cases, complicated (and expensive) surgeries and medications are needed to stop the swelling and subsequent damage from occurring.

Potential Consequences of Brain Herniation

In addition to irreparable tissue damage, if not immediately controlled, brain herniation can result in the following complications:

  • Cognitive impairments. Because of the trauma you experienced from the herniation, your brain may have difficulties putting things together. As a result, you may not be able to think as clearly as you used to, you may have problems with memory, and your personality could change.
  • Speech impairments. The herniation may cause damage to the part of your brain that controls speech. You will likely need to learn how to talk and pronounce your words again. Long-term therapy may correct or improve the problem.
  • Mobility impairments. The herniation may limit your mobility by decreasing the ability for your brain to communicate with your body. Physical therapy and exercise may be able to restore your mobility or help you cope with your condition.
