We all know how dangerous texting and driving can be. Research shows that drivers can become distracted by texting enough to take their eyes off the road and become involved in a Houston accident. Imagine how serious that crash can be if it involves a semi.
This concern has prompted President Barack Obama to institute a national band on truckers and commercial bus drivers from texting while operating their vehicles. As a matter of fact, each offense can put their license at risk and may even subject them to fines up to $2,750 per infraction.
“Today we’re sending a strong message,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “We don’t merely expect you to share the road responsibly with other travelers, we require you to do so.”
The problem for Texas officials is that there are no current state laws banning truckers and commercial bus drivers from texting while driving. The Texas Department of Pubic Safety is now scrambling to find ways to enforce the new national band.
We can all rest assured that the Texas roadways will be safer. The trucker driving next to you and your family will have their eyes on the road.
