Are truck drivers usually to blame for truck accidents?

Most people do not like driving next to huge tractor-trailers on the highway. Maybe it is simply because of the vehicle’s size, or maybe it could even be a bit of fear, but nearly everyone will admit to avoiding these massive rigs on the road.

Because of this fairly uniform anxiety among passenger vehicles towards tractor-trailers, one would assume that non-commercial drivers would have a deep distrust of the men and women who drive these vehicles. After all, most big truck accident stories that make the news involve a sleeping or impaired truck driver, and the media loves to discuss hours of duty regulations for all commercial transportation professionals (truck drivers, bus drivers, and pilots to name a few).

In a recent poll of 800 registered voters however, the American Trucking Associations found some shocking information. A vast majority of people believe that truck drivers are better, safer drivers than passenger vehicle drivers—a fact that, despite media coverage to the contrary, is most often true. The poll found the following attitudes from passenger vehicle drivers:

  • 91 percent of respondents believed that passenger vehicle drivers were more likely to drive dangerously, including unsafe lane changes and tailgating.
  • 90 percent of respondents believed that passenger vehicle drivers were more likely to speed than truck drivers.
  • 80 percent of respondents believed that truck drivers are safer drivers than passenger vehicle drivers.
  • 74 percent of respondents believed that in an accident involving a car and truck, the driver of the car was most likely at fault.

This poll backs what many industry professionals have been saying for years—that truck drivers, as a whole, are safety-minded professionals that are far better trained than passenger vehicle drivers.

While most truck drivers are exceptionally talented and safe drivers, a few bad apples in the bunch can still cause a world of hurt.
