Yet another bicyclist was killed in an accident in northwest Houston on Wednesday. (Chron.com)
In 2009, 630 bicyclists were killed and 51,000 were injured in the United States (EdgarSnyder). It is important to take multiple steps to stay safe on the roads. Many drivers do not always see motorcycle or bicycle riders especially at night. If you are riding a bike at night you are required by law to have a headlight. You should also wear bright clothing. Anything extra that you can do to make sure you are seen is worth the time and trouble. In addition to a head light on your bike you can also put a blinking light on the back of your bike and/or on your helmet.
It is essential to always wear a helmet when riding a bike, but more precautions should be taken. You should always be very cautious of everything that is going around you. Just because you can see the cars does not mean that they can see you.
Studies show that crosswalk riding is much more dangerous than road riding (Bicycling Life). It is easy to seriously injure a person walking by. Cars turning into and out of parking lots do not expect you to be on the crosswalk. Moreover, it is illegal to ride a bicycle on many sidewalks in some places for these reasons.
