Why are there thousands of truck accidents each that result in serious injuries? This question is one that can be answered by the Large Truck Crash Causation Study by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). These two agencies conducted the study as a way to examine the reasons for serious large truck accidents.

The study reviewed a sample of the 120,000 truck crashes that took place between April 2001 and December 2003.

According to the published study, there are elements involved in truck crashes that occur hours, days or even months before the crash. These factors include truck driver training and experience, truck design and manufacture, highway condition and weather conditions. Tire blowout and snow are also common contributing factors to serious truck accidents.

Researchers found that the risk of a serious truck accident increased when there were factors such as driver fatigue, alcohol and speeding, involved. In addition, researchers came up with a list of top 10 factors associated with large truck accidents, such as:

• Brake problems
• Disruption in traffic flow
• Use of prescription drug
• Driving too fast for conditions
• Road unfamiliarity
• Problems with the road
• Traffic control device
• Use of over-the-counter drug
• Inadequate surveillance
Truck driver fatigue

There were also critical events assigned to truck accidents, which include the following:

• Running out of travel lane
• Loss of control due to driving too fast for conditions, cargo shift, truck system failure, poor road conditions or other reasons
• Rear-end collision with another vehicle in the truck’s lane

A large truck accident in Texas can lead to serious injuries. In 2007, there were over 10,000 reported injuries caused by truck accidents and nearly 500 fatalities. The trucking company can be held liable for truck accident injuries. If you or a loved one has been injured in a Texas truck accident, you need to contact attorney Steve Lee.
