According to Chron.com, traffic deaths have decreased drastically in the United States. This is likely due to better technology and safer cars, more safety-conscious drivers, and more severe enforcement of drunken driving convictions.

On October 7th The Transportation Department said that highway deaths dropped 9.7 percent in 2009 to 33,808, the lowest number since 1950. There were an estimated 37,423 deaths due to traffic accidents in 2008.

Auto safety experts believe more people are wearing seat belts. They also attributed the decrease to new technology such as side air bags and anti-rollover technology.

Reductions were reported in 41 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Florida led with 422 fewer traffic deaths followed closely by Texas, down 405.

In previous years the decrease could also be accredited to the economic slump. Generally traffic fatalities have declined during economic downturns when many drivers cut back on discretionary travel. However, the estimated number of miles driven increased in 2009 by 0.2 percent versus 2008.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said, "While we've come a long way... We have a long distance yet to travel."
