If you want to consider how dangerous a vehicle rollover is, all you have to do is look at the numbers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, rollovers only occur in 3% of accidents, but they account for 33% of all traffic fatalities.

With numbers like this, it’s obvious that a rollover accident is something that you want to avoid. With that in mind, here are some of the more common causes of rollover accidents. Taking a good look at some of the causes could help you avoid an accident where a rollover occurs.

Vehicle Types: All types of vehicles can rollover, but some are more susceptible than others. Cars like minivans, suv’s, pickups and multi-passenger vans are narrower and have higher centers of gravity. These sorts of vehicles have a higher percentage of rollover incidents than any other type of car.

Speed: A car can rollover when it is going as slow as fifteen miles an hour, but the severe incidents where the vehicles roll over multiple times happen where the car is going at an excessive rate of speed. According to the NHTSA, 40% of fatal rollover crashes occurred where the driver was going over the speed limit, and almost ¾ of all rollover fatalities happened where the posted speed limit was 55 miles an hour.

Alcohol Use: Nothing affects your ability to drive worse than having alcohol in your system. The numbers from the NHTSA show that half of fatal rollover accidents involve the use of alcohol. While driving while intoxicated is never a good idea, one of the many risks is involving yourself in a rollover accident.

Distracted Driving: Many people are under the assumption that rollover accidents happen on roads where the driver is unfamiliar with the terrain. In fact, the opposite is true. Most rollover accidents happen during routine driving. That means they happen when you are making your daily commute, or when you are taking your kids to school, or when you are driving to the grocery store. We have a theory as to why that is. We have noticed that many of our clients have been injured in accidents where the other driver was talking on the cell phone, or texting, or fiddling with their iPod; in short, they occur due to people not paying attention to the road. It isn’t hard to imagine someone drifting off into another lane while they text their friends and then jerking the wheel back in order to correct themselves. This is the sort of thing that causes rollover accidents. If you are driving, keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel. Any other course of action is dangerous to both you and other drivers on the road.

There are a few things that you can do to avoid death in a rollover accident. For one thing, many cars now feature what is called “Electronic Stability Control,” which helps the driver maintain control when the vehicle slides into a skid. This isn’t standard yet on many cars, but if you can afford this option, you should take it.

You should also remember to always wear your seatbelt. According to the NHTSA, cars in rollover accidents have a 75% lower fatality rate when passengers are wearing seatbelts.

Although there can be a severe injury in an accident where the cars are only traveling 15 miles per hour, rollover accidents are without a doubt the most dangerous sort of accident that a driver can find himself involved in.
