More frightening news has been released regarding drunk drivers. According to a recent study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in 10 binge drinkers will get behind the wheel after excessive drinking. About 50 percent of these binge drinkers will drive after having five more alcohol beverages at a bar, restaurant or nightclub.
What does this mean for other drivers on the road? Intoxicated drivers pose a major threat to the safety of other people on Texas roads and highways. Nationally, more than 11,000 people die every year in drunk driving accidents. What is so unfortunate about these collisions is that they are preventable.
Researchers involved in the CDC study polled 14,000 binge drinkers, who were defined as people who consume more than five drinks on a single occasion. The study was conducted via telephone from 2003 to 2004. Some people believe that things have changed since then, as the number of deaths has gone down, which is attributed to court-mandated devices and other prevention tactics.
Many people who responded to the telephone survey admitted to driving after 10 drinks. Even if these drinks were consumed over a long period of time, 10 drinks is going to get somebody intoxicated and they should not drive by any means.
There have been numerous safety advocates that have called for better regulations for bars, restaurants and other establishments that serve alcohol. They strongly feel that once someone is clearly intoxicated, they should no longer be provided with alcoholic drinks. However, it has been said that policing these establishments is very difficult.
