Did you know that the use of child safety seats and seat belts are below national goals? Did you also know that 38 percent of motor vehicle accident fatalities involve alcohol? The Task Force on Community Preventive Services, an independent, nonfederal agency, put together recommendations to address these major safety concerns.
It has been reported that motor vehicle-related injuries claim the lives of more children and young adults in the United States than any other factor. Auto accidents are also the leading cause of death from unintentional injury for Americans of all ages. Tens of thousands of people die each year in crashes across the country. Texas is no exception. There are countless reports of Houston car accidents that turn out to be fatal.
Child Safety Seats Are Essential The first recommendation given by the Task Force was to encourage the use of child safety seats. The Task Force quoted a statistic that when child car seats are properly installed and used, they can lower the risk of death by 70 percent for infants and by 47 to 54 percent for toddlers. They also believe that child seat usage can reduce the need for hospitalization by 69 percent for children 4 years old and younger.
Seat Belts Save Lives The Task Force firmly believes in primary enforcement safety belt laws, meaning a police officer can stop a vehicle solely based on a safety belt violation. Seat belts have been known to reduce deaths by 45 to 60 percent and to reduce serious injury to the head, chest, and extremities by 50 to 83 percent.
Alcohol Impairment Leads to Fatal Accidents Every year, thousands of people are killed in drunk driving accidents. Houston and the rest of the state of Texas are not immune to this problem. Some of the recommendations given by the Task Force to reduce the number of alcohol-related accidents, include maintaining the minimum legal drinking age of 21, following 0.08 percent blood alcohol concentration laws for people 21 and older, using sobriety checkpoints and training servers of alcoholic beverages.
