The New York Times has reported that the U.S. Transportation Department has a new rule that “prohibits interstate commercial truckers and bus drivers from sending text messages while they are operating moving vehicles. Truckers and bus drivers who violate the rule, which is effective immediately, face civil or criminal fines of up to $2,750.”
The Transportation Department announced this rule on Tuesday, January 26, 2010. This initiative is part of a more extensive effort by the Transportation Department to lower the amount of distracted driving.
The question now becomes – how will this texting ban affect the amount of Houston truck accidents?
A recent Houston 18-wheeler accident shows the devastation that this type of crash can cause. The collision took place on a Saturday morning on January 9, 2010, when the semi struck another vehicle. One person died as a result of this tragic crash.
This Houston trucking accident is not an isolated case. Every year, on average, about 5,000 people die and another 100,000 are injured in truck accidents across the country. Joan Claybrook, Chair of Citizens for Reliable and Safe Highways (CRASH), made a statement that some of these accidents are caused by distracted driving and texting.
This recent action to ban cell phone texting by drivers of commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce will hopefully reduce the amount of injuries and deaths caused by truck crashes. If more truckers can keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, it is pretty reasonable to assume that the number of collisions should go down.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a Texas truck accident, you should contact a Houston truck accident lawyer to find out your legal options.
