Should trucks be longer and heavier? This question is at the center of a much-heated debate. The Truck Safety Coalition is so strongly opposed to bigger trucks, that it has dedicated a website to this very issue, StopBiggerTrucks.org.

In the words of the Truck Safety Coalition – “They’re coming: bigger, longer, heavier, deadlier trucks. Unless Congress and state legislatures take action now, these trucks will threaten more American lives and damage more of the streets, bridges, and highways we travel every day.” According to this truck safety advocacy group, which is made up of truck accident survivors, when compared to single-trailer trucks, double-trailer trucks are 32 percent more often involved in deadly accidents. They are also 200 percent more likely to be involved in interstate highway collisions.

If trucks are allowed to be bigger, it does raise a question – would there be an increase in Texas truck accidents? Based on research, there is the strong likelihood that this would happen. Some studies have shown that significantly increasing the sizes and weights of combination rigs would probably raise the safety risks per vehicle mile traveled. Already, at least 10 to 20 percent of the large trucks on the road are over the legal weight limit.

The Truck Safety Coalition has also reported that truckers aren’t necessarily comfortable with the idea of operating larger trucks. Its website states that “more than 80% of truck drivers agree with the statement that doubles and triples are less safe than single-trailer trucks.” In fact, some truckers are afraid to drive double or triple trailers.
