How Motorcyclists Can Recover From Road Rage Incidents

“Nearly 80 percent of drivers expressed significant anger, aggression or road rage behind the wheel at least once in the past year,” according to a AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study released in 2016.

The study found that angry drivers engaged in dangerous behaviors including tailgating, trying to prevent another vehicle from changing lanes, and hitting another vehicle on purpose. This can be dangerous for any driver, but motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to the physical consequences of other drivers’ road rage.

The AAA Foundation study found that about 90% of drivers think that aggressive drivers are a “serious threat to their personal safety,” and approximately two out of every three drivers think that angry and aggressive drivers are a bigger problem now than they were just a few years ago.

Why Riders Are at Risk

As a motorcyclist, you know that you are vulnerable because you lack the metal protections of a car or truck, but did you know that you may also be at risk because of the vehicle that you drive? Relying on unfair stereotypes, many auto and truck drivers think of motorcycle riders as nuisances who are in their way. They may be disrespectful—or worse—and they may act dangerously when they are near you on the road. They may refuse to provide you with the right of way or they may fail to keep a safe distance.

As a motorcyclist, it is important to be aware of the risk, to avoid engaging with angry drivers, and to keep a safe distance from others on the road.

Make a Full Recovery After a Road Rage Incident

Crashes caused by angry drivers are typically the fault of the angry drivers. Angry drivers may be negligent. They may allow their emotions to cloud their judgment and they may fail to watch for you and others on the road.
