Top Ten Worst Insurance Companies

If you have ever had to file an insurance claim, you know how difficult insurance companies can be. The American Association for Justice, a group of trial lawyers, ranked the top ten worst insurance companies to work with, based on a thorough investigation of thousands of legal documents and financial filings.

According to the investigation, Allstate ranked as number one when it came to avoiding claims and other practices. American Association for Justice CEO Jon Haber said, “while Allstate publicly touts its ‘good hands’ approach, it has instead privately instructed its agents to employ a ‘boxing gloves’ strategy against its policyholders. Allstate ducks, bobs and weaves to avoid paying claims to increase profits.” The group said that Allstate is in a class all by itself when it comes to avoiding claims.

When it came to Allstate’s rating, the lawyer group based it on thousands of court documents, which included litigation materials and testimonies, as well as complaints with state insurance departments, SEC and FBI records.

The lawyer group reviewed the tactics that companies use to avoid paying claims and rewards they give to executives, among other things. It was suggested that many of these insurers raised premiums to maximize profits.

Allstate wasn’t the only one that made the top ten list of worst insurance companies. Below are the remaining insurers who are considered the worst:

  1. Unuum
  2. AIG
  3. State Farm
  4. Conseco
  5. WellPoint
  6. Farmers
  7. UnitedHealth
  8. Torchmark
  9. Liberty Mutual
