Texas has enacted a new law that will make it tougher for drunk drivers. It has been estimated that nearly half of all Texas drivers refuse a blood or breath test when pulled over for drunk driving. Now police will have more power to enforce these tests.

As of September 2009, police have the authority to require a blood test without a warrant for suspected drunk drivers who are involved in car accidents that result in injuries, have children in the car or have repeat DWI offenses. The new law also allows more sources to approve blood test warrants, when needed, which gets the warrant quicker when a driver won’t take a blood test.

Every year, thousands of people die in Texas drunk driving accidents. In 2007, 3,363 people lost their lives in Texas car accidents and alcohol played a factor in many of those crashes. MADD spokeswoman Kathy Bell-Schexnaider said, “we’ve got to get proactive and not reactive, quit waiting for people to die.”

The first weekend this law went into effect, police officers in Southeast Texas pulled over 300 vehicles on Jefferson County roads. Among those stops, eleven turned into DWI arrests.
