There are very few accidents more devastating than truck wrecks. Every year, thousands of people are injured in truck accidents in Texas and throughout the United States. Tired truckers, poorly training, defective trucks and excess loads are just a few of the many reasons behind serious truck accident cases in our state. These types of accidents can lead to catastrophic injuries, including brain injury.

One of the leading causes of traumatic brain injury in the United States is motor vehicle-traffic crashes, which account for 20 percent of all cases. Traumatic brain injury, also referred to as head injury, or TBI, affects 1.4 million people each year in the United States and is responsible for approximately 50,000 deaths annually.

Traumatic brain injury occurs when a sudden trauma, such as a Texas 18 wheeler accident, causes damage to the brain. It results from the head violently hitting an object or from an object penetrating the skull. The severity of TBI varies from mild to severe.

Symptoms of traumatic brain injury include the following:

  • Memory loss
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Depression
  • Vision problems
  • Irritability
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears

A more severe TBI case may have additional symptoms, such as:

  • Persistent headache
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Seizures
  • Inability to awaken from sleep
  • Pupil dilation
  • Slurred speech
  • Loss of coordination
  • Weakness or numbness in the extremities

Any time that a head trauma is suspected following a truck accident, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention. Even though brain damage cannot be reversed from traumatic brain injury, medical personnel will be able to focus on preventing further injury. Some of the main concerns that the medical provider will have is making sure there is oxygen flowing to the brain and the rest of the body and that blood pressure is controlled. A severe TBI may require surgery.

It is not uncommon for an injured victim to have a lengthy recovery for their head injury. For example, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy are sometimes required following traumatic brain injury. However, these treatments can become expensive.

If you or a family member has suffered a head injury from a Texas truck accident, you may be entitled to financial compensation from the driver or trucking company. Contact Attorney Steve Lee, an experienced Houston truck accident attorney, today at 713-921-4171 or 800-232-3711 for legal advice.
