Eight states have now banned texting for all drivers. As concerns have been made regarding the safety of sending text messages while behind the wheel, many people have rallied to have texting and driving banned.
Texas currently does not have a law banning drivers from texting. The states that currently have laws in place regarding drivers’ texting include Alaska, California, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Jersey and Washington. These laws addressed concerns regarding the risk of accidents caused by driver distractions, such as texting. The majority of these states make texting a primary offense, meaning drivers can get pulled over solely for violating the ban.
Many of the anti-texting laws have followed general bans regarding using cell phones while driving. Some states have enacted laws banning the use of hand held devices while driving.
According to a Nationwide Insurance study, an estimated 20 percent of drivers are sending or receiving text messages while driving. Another poll shows that 66 percent of drivers ages 18 to 24 text and drive.
Last year, a fatal accident was widely publicized when investigators discovered that the driver of the vehicle had been texting just moments before the collision. Five young women, who had just graduated from high school, died when their car hit a tractor-trailer. There have been similar stories across the country of car accidents caused by texting.
It has been difficult to determine the amount of car accidents caused by texting, but anecdotal evidence has tied texting with accidents. Studies have associated cell phone use with an increase in crash risk, but little has been discovered regarding the link between texting and accidents.
There has been one published study on texting and driving by the Transport Research Laboratory in the United Kingdom. The study showed that texting negatively impacted performance in a driving simulator. According to researchers, writing a text message affected driving more than reading one. The drivers involved in the study were 12 to 24 years old. They showed slower reaction times, were more likely to drift out of their virtual lanes and were more likely to lower their speeds while they were texting.
