A young girl died in Houston County on November 16, 2012, after being hit by a car as she walked along the side of the road.
Ashley Marie Mahanay, 12, of Crockett, was walking westward on FM 132 just south of Highway 7 at approximately 4:45 in the afternoon. Wanda Cook Saliagas, also of Crockett, was also heading west on the road in a 2009 Toyota Corolla.
Saliagas said the sunlight temporarily blinded her and she did not see the girl walking along the road. Mahanay died at the scene.
