Accidents Decrease After Red Light Cameras Removed

Posted on May 11, 2011

It has been five months since Houstonians voted against the use of red light cameras and to the surprise of Houston police administrators, accidents at these lights have decreased 16%. (Chron.com)

There could be multiple explanations for the decrease such as decreased rainfall, fewer people on the roads, or overall safer driving habits.  Studies show that more accidents occure in rainy/wet weather conditions.  In any case, HPD records showed that accidents decreased at 32 of the intersections, increased at 21 and stayed the same at 17.

One of the main reasons to keep the red light cameras was to discourage people from running red lights. This in turn would prevent many traffic accidents at those intersections and potentially save lives.

Statistics show that although accidents have decreased at these intersections, more people have been running the lights.  It has only been 5 months, and after more time administrators expect the percentage of accidents to increase.

If you become a victim of a speeding driver, you might be able to hold the driver responsible. You might be able to collect compensation to help secure your family's financial future.
