Driver Surrenders for Hit and Run That Killed 4-Year Old

July 23, 2010 - Houston, TX - The driver who fled from a fatal crash that killed a 4-year-old child has finally been arrested.

Click2Houston.com reports that Houston police have taken 26-year-old Raul Eulises Velasquez into custody, charging him with failure to stop and render aid with serious bodily injury. Velasquez turned himself into the Harris County Sheriff's Office on Thursday, 5 days after the fatal July 17th crash.

The police reports state that Velasquez was driving his Honda Accord at a high speed southbound along the Southwest Freeway. While weaving in and out of traffic, he lost control and crashed into a pole. His vehicle contained 5 other passengers, including 4-year-old Rolando Olvera who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Velasquez fled on foot immediately after the crash, leaving behind Olvera, as well as a 3-year-old boy and 28-year-old man, both in critical condition, and a 23-year-old woman and 21-year-old man with minor injuries. The toddler was taken to Texas Children's Hospital, the 28-year-old to Ben Taub Hospital, and the other two victims to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's 2008 Crash Statistics, there were 3,382 fatalities as a result of traffic accidents in Texas.
