Drowsiness a Factor in Fatal Houston Car Accident

Posted on Jun 29, 2009

A husband and wife were traveling to Sugar Land early morning on Sunday, June 28, 2009, when the husband pulled their car onto the shoulder of the Eastex Freeway at Kingwood.  He wanted to trade places with his wife because he was tired.

Willie Tolert, a 54-year-old man, was driving his Chevy Aveo when he pulled onto the side of the freeway.  A red pickup truck smashed into the back of the couple’s vehicle as they were switching places and killed Tolert instantly.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  His wife was not injured in the fatal Texas car accident.  The pickup driver was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital – The Texas Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition.

The pickup driver admitted that he may have fallen asleep at the wheel.   According to police, the pickup driver was not intoxicated at the time of the accident, but he may have taken some kind of pills.  He was supposed to be tested for drugs at the hospital.
