HFD captain fired over ‘disgraceful’ conduct at wreck

Melissa Manriquez’s prognosis was grim after she was thrown from her Ford Explorer during a crash on the Gulf Freeway’s service road. When paramedics found her lying on the pavement in a pool of blood, she had a faint pulse and labored breathing. Within moments, they detected no signs of life.

After the 18-year-old waitress and single mother had been covered with a sheet — allegedly on a Houston Fire Department captain’s orders — several tow truck drivers and other witnesses noticed something startling: The sheet was rising and falling. Manriquez was still breathing.
