Houston Car Accidents are Higher Under Wet Conditions

Posted on Jan 17, 2012

One man was killed in an SUV accident last night around 9 p.m. in the 7900 block of Little York near North Wayside.  (Chron.com)
According to police, slick road conditions likely contributed to the accident.
You can’t always prevent crashes on wet roads.  It is easy to lose control of your vehicle and spin or skid out of control.  However, there are ways you can be prepared.

  • Maintain a safe distance between you and the vehicle in front of you.  SmartMotorist.com encourages a "three second rule" during good driving directions.  "Making sure there are three seconds between you and the car ahead gives you time and distance to respond to problems in the lane ahead of you."  In heavy traffic, at night, or when weather conditions are not ideal (eg. light rain, light fog, light snow) the time is increased to six seconds.  During very poor weather conditions such as heavy rain, heavy fog, or heavy snow the time is tripled to nine seconds.
  • Watch your tire pressure.  It takes longer for your car to stop and you are more likely to skid if your tires are not full.
  • Pay close attention to driving.  Distracted driving is even more dangerous in poor weather conditions.
