We often hear about accidents involving two or more vehicles where one of the drivers was operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but a recent Houston DWI car accident showed how tragic it can be when both drivers have allegedly been drinking.

Shortly after 2:00 a.m., Francis Layton, 29, was with his friends at an IHOP when he noticed that he had left his coat at a nearby bar. He drove his red Volkswagen east on FM 1960 and when attempting to turn into a parking lot, crossed in front of a black Camaro going the opposite direction. The Camaro, driven by Danyra Montoya, 23, struck the Volkswagen and caused a violent rotation. Layton was ejected from his car and pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The Camaro continued on and crashed into a utility pole, killing Montoya’s passenger, Brian Montoya. Danyra Montoya was taken by helicopter to Hermann Hospital in critical condition.

Officials report that Danyra showed signs of impairment and was arrested. Deputies suspect both drivers had been drinking earlier in the night, but think speed may have also played a part in the fatal crash. Investigators are still waiting for toxicology results so they can know for sure whether alcohol contributed to this accident.

A woman who works nearby the accident scene said the Camaro was completely wrapped around the utility pole and it knocked out power to a few businesses in the area; traffic was also tied up for several hours at FM 1960 and Wortham.

Our thoughts go out to the families suffering as a result of this tragic car crash.
