One Dead From Harris County DWI Accident, Driver in Critical Condition
Posted on Oct 05, 2013
On the morning of Sunday, September 15, just before 7 am, a silver BMW sped into a tree on Woodforest Boulevard in Channelview. Both of the vehicle’s occupants had been out the previous night watching the Floyd Mayweather, Jr./Canelo Alvarez fight, and police suspect that alcohol played a factor in the crash.
The driver, Wilfredo Chavez Lopez, was traveling eastbound on Woodforest at an excessive rate of speed when he lost control, hit a curb, and struck a tree. Lopez was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was ejected from the car on impact. He was transported to Ben Taub General Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
The passenger, Carlos Senea, was also not wearing a seat belt. Senea, who officials say was 18 or 19 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. Lopez may face charges in Senea’s death. The accident remains under investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, but alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor.
The speed limit on Woodforest Boulevard is 30 mph, but area residents say that high speeds often cause fatal accidents on the road. A school zone nearby requires drivers to slow to 20 mph while school is in session, and residents are concerned about how little traffic control measures such as stop lights and turn lights have done to prevent the accidents and protect area students.
