July 9, 2010 - Houston, TX - A Toyota Camry that ran a red light was the cause of a horrific car crash that left 2 teen girls dead and 3 others hospitalized early Friday morning.
MyFOXHouston reports that a Ford Expedition was stopped in the left lane of the Beltway 8 frontage road while an 18-wheeler truck was stopped in the right lane. The Camry traveling on the Eastex Freeway frontage road sped through the red light as both the Expedition and 18-wheeler entered the intersection.
The Camry avoided the 18-wheeler but the driver of the Expedition was unable to see the oncoming vehicle and continued into the intersection where it was struck. The Camry crashed into the Expedition, ejecting 3 of the 5 teenage girls who were passengers. A 16-year-old and 13-year-old were pronounced dead at the site. The 3rd girl was taken to Ben Taub General Hospital in critical condition.
The remaining 2 girls and 2 adults were taken to a hospital in stable condition while the driver of the Camry was uninjured. The driver of the Expedition was identified by police as the father of one of the girls who died.
Investigators have not determined whether the driver of the Camry was intoxicated following a field sobriety test, but pending blood tests will provide more conclusive results.
The accident caused the frontage roads to be closed for almost 5 hours before the intersection was opened around 6:30AM Friday morning.
