The Consequences When Negligent Drivers Run Vehicles Off the Road

Every year hundreds of thousands of catastrophic car accident injuries are caused by negligence. In fact, safe drivers are continually being put at risk because certain drivers choose to put them at risk by making poor decisions. Decisions such as:

  • Driving drunk
  • Driving while on drugs
  • Driving distracted (adjusting an audio playlist, putting on makeup, reading a map, etc.)
  • Driving and talking on a cell phone
  • Driving and texting
  • Driving over the speed limit

…and the list goes on. Basically, any action that a driver chooses to do that takes his focus off the road can be considered negligent and ultimately result in a horrendous car collision.

When Focus Runs Off

One type of negligent car accident that is grossly underestimated—but nonetheless very dangerous—occurs when a negligent driver’s lack of focus forces another driver off the road. When a driver becomes so distracted that he can’t tell where other cars are located on the road, it is easy for that driver to veer over, merge, or completely shove his way into a lane that is already occupied. It is left up to the driver already in the lane to take evasive action to avoid a collision. That evasive action generally entails veering to the side of the road or up on a curb.

Unfortunately, by being forced to veer off the road, an innocent driver may be forced into a dangerous situation. He may be pushed…

  • Toward a ditch or trench. If a driver is forced to toward a ditch, his car may not only careen into the hole, but the force of the impact could crumple the vehicle, trapping and seriously injuring those inside.
  • Toward a curb. If a driver is forced onto a curb while going more than 10 mph, the concrete elevation can severely damage the vehicle (tires could pop, bumper could become crushed, airbags could go off, etc.) as well as cause impact injuries to passengers. At faster velocities, the vehicle may even roll onto its side or flip upside down.
  • Toward inanimate objects. If a driver is forced into a tree, telephone pole, sign, parked car, etc., the impact could not only cause property damage but could also pulverize the vehicle and those within it.
  • Toward pedestrians or other cars. If a driver is forced to veer away from an oncoming vehicle, he may not have time to fully examine where or what he is veering toward. As a result, by attempting to avoid the negligent driver he may wind up careening toward another driver, or worse still, a pedestrian and cause his own catastrophic collision.
