Don’t Put Your Kids in the Car Without Inspecting Their Safety Seat First
At the Houston law office of Attorney Steve Lee, we are huge supporters of car seats for children. It may seem like nearly everyone in Texas makes sure their children are riding in proper car seats, but the sad fact is that they are most definitely not. In addition to individuals allowing their children to—illegally—ride in a motor vehicle without proper safety seats, there are others who think they are doing the right thing, but end up using the wrong type of seat or installing the right seat incorrectly.
One week from today marks the beginning of Child Passenger Safety Week in our country; the official observance this year is September 14 – 20, 2014. September 20th is also National Seat Check Saturday which is when parents are encouraged to visit designated inspection locations to have their children’s car seats evaluated by professionals for proper type and installation. There are several different child safety inspection stations throughout the city of Houston including at the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT), Houston Community College’s West Campus, and Texas Children’s Center for Childhood Injury Prevention. Use the Station Locator at safecar.gov to find the location closest to you and the hours of operation.
Car crashes are the leading cause of death for children that are 1 to 13-years-old. In 2012, 37 percent of kids killed in wrecks were not in car seats, booster seats, or seat belts. Ensuring our children are properly restrained in a vehicle is not hard, but the extra effort can go a long way in protecting children. Next week during Child Passenger Safety Week, please devote a small amount of time to educating yourself about safety seat laws and regulations and make the effort to have your seats inspected.
