When Luck Runs Out: Getting Hurt in a St. Patrick’s Day DWI Accident

You know St. Patrick’s Day is notorious for all-day drinking and drunk driving. Because you don’t want to risk causing an accident or receiving a DWI, you decided not to drink before you got behind the wheel. The person who hit you on Highway 90, however, did not. He was driving way too fast, lost control, and smashed into your car.

After the airbags deployed and your car stopped spinning, you realized what happened. Paramedics had to help you out of your vehicle and took you to the hospital, where you received emergency treatment. Unfortunately, this is a scenario that far too many drivers experience on St. Paddy’s Day.

Preventing a St. Patrick’s Day Crash

You did what you could to stay out of an accident, but no matter how hard you try, you can’t always stop other drivers from hurting you. You can, however, be on the lookout for such drivers. Signs of an intoxicated driver include:

Swerving. If the car near you just can’t seem to stay in one lane, the driver is likely intoxicated. Either get into another lane that is as far away from the car as possible, or pull over in a safe place until the motorist is out of sight.
Speeding or driving excessively slow. Drunk drivers often aren’t aware of just how fast they are traveling or they want to stay out of trouble and attempt to do so by driving way below the speed limit. Both are dangerous, and you should avoid driving near anyone who does so.
Tailgating. Some drivers become aggressive when driving while under the influence. If a motorist becomes angry at the way you’re driving, you may find the driver following you too closely. When this happens, get out of the driver’s way either by switching lanes or pulling over.
