If a terrible accident happens once, it’s safe to call it a freak accident. When the same accident happens again—and results in more serious consequences—it should be expected and prevented. This is what occurred on an escalator at the Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas last week.

In what is being called an escalator malfunction, according to reports, the moving stairway that was carrying people from the first floor of the convention center to the second stopped in mid-turn. Then, in a scary turn of events, the escalator started descending quickly, throwing the people on the escalator on top of each other and over the sides.

According to reports of the accident, some of the people who were on the escalator when the accident happened were thrown to the ground on the first floor. Many sustained injuries as the result of this tumble, many of these to their legs. While some people were treated at the convention center; others’ injuries required a hospital visit.

«There have been some injuries,» said Andrea Delaune, spokesperson for the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. «Several people have received medical attention on sight. Ten people were transported,» she said.

The people that were injured in the escalator accident in San Antonio were there for a Dish Network team summit, but presumably, the escalators were the responsibility of the convention center itself. Dish Network has refused to comment on the incident.

Interestingly, a similar Texas escalator accident happened at the same convention center last August, but it was not as serious as the one that occurred this week. Given the circumstances and the injuries that were sustained last week, it seems as though insufficient notice was taken to cure the defects first apparent in August. A suit may be possible.
