How long should I wait after a truck collision to see a doctor?

You should seek medical attention as soon as possible after your truck accident. Even if you feel perfectly fine, that doesn’t mean you’re not injured. Delaying medical treatment may lead to serious long-term health problems or even death.

Typical Delayed Onset Injuries

When you’ve been injured in a truck accident, you may not feel pain right away. The adrenaline rush caused by a severe accident can temporarily mask symptoms. Additionally, certain types of injuries may not manifest any pain symptoms until several days after the collision.

These injuries may include:

  • Whiplash. Whiplash is injury to the neck, and is also sometimes known as neck sprain or neck strain. When whiplash occurs, joints, discs, ligaments, cervical muscles, and nerve roots may be damaged.
  • Back pain. The force of a vehicle accident can put tremendous pressure on the spine, leading to disc and facet joint injuries. Most people experience pain in the lower spine area, caused by spinal stenosis, disc herniation, lumbar sprains, and degenerative spinal disorder.
  • Headache. If you develop a constant headache in the days or weeks following a vehicle accident, you may be suffering from post-traumatic headache. This condition is typically caused by a blow to the head, such as striking the steering wheel, a window, or another hard surface.
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Approximately nine percent of motor vehicle accident survivors develop PTSD. This condition is often characterized by feelings of anxiety and an increased heart rate when memories of the collision surface.

After the Car Accident

When you’ve been involved in a vehicle collision, you should obtain a medical evaluation even if you believe the injuries are minor. If you can, visit the emergency room immediately following your accident. Otherwise, see your primary care physician as soon as possible.
