A recent study done by Transportation for America shows that Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, TX is the 9th most dangerous metro area for pedestrians in the United States.
According to the study, between the years 2000 and 2009 there were 1,024 preventable pedestrian fatalities in the Houston metro area.
Florida had all top 4 most dangerous areas. Orlando-Kissimmee was first, followed by Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Jacksonville,and finally Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Pompano Beach, FL.
Finishing up the top ten were Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, CA at number 5, Las Vegas-Paradise, NV at number 6, Memphis, TN-MS-AR at number 7, Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ at number 8 and Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, TX was the tenth most dangerous metro area.
KTRK reports that yet another pedestrian was killed this morning in northwest Harris County. He was attepting to cross Highway 6 after leaving a bar when he was struck by a vehicle. According to the report it was raining hard and the man was wearing dark clothing.
Most pedestrian accidents happen in the early morning hours. It it essential to wear light colored clothing and be extra cautious at all times when walking near roadways. It is even more important when it is dark outside and in bad weather conditions.
