Making Roads Safer for Older Drivers and the Other Motorists in Their Path

As you’re driving on Houston-area roads, you may notice many older motorists traveling along with you. According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), higher numbers of older drivers are occupying the roads than ever. In fact, drivers over the age of 50 accounted for nearly half of all drivers on the road in 2013.

In data that was collected from all 50 states, there were 212.2 million drivers in the United States in 2013. Drivers older than 50 made up 93.5 million—or 44.1 percent—of that total, which was an increase of 22 percent since 2003. Additionally, drivers over the age of 85 have doubled since 1998. This demographic has risen from 1.76 million in 1998 to 3.48 million in 2013, which is the second highest amount ever recorded.

What More Older Drivers on the Road Means for You

Sharing the road with older motorists means an increased need for defensive driving. Changes in road design, signage, and safety features are also in the works to protect all drivers as the population ages.

  • Design features for senior drivers. In response to the aging driver population, brighter and more visible signs and highway markers have been installed, as well as pedestrian countdown signals. However, the work is not done and motorists can expect to see more changes aimed at keeping drivers of all ages safe.
  • Staying on top of your defenses. Some older drivers experience visual and physical impairments that can cause them to make mistakes while driving. Since the number of older drivers is on the rise, you are increasingly at risk for becoming involved in an accident. Driving carefully by staying at the speed limit, paying attention, and leaving long distances between you and the vehicle ahead are some of your best defenses against crashes.
