Paying the Price of Working as a Cashier

At first glance, it may seem like a cashier has a cushy job. After all, besides hearing that constant annoying beep, there’s not too much that’s difficult about their jobs, right? They essentially swipe merchandise across a scanner and place said merchandise into bags.

Have you ever thought about the type of damage that all that swiping can do, though? Or about the toll that standing for eight hours a day places on your feet, legs, back, and neck? When it comes down to it, cashiers have a very physically demanding job.

Check Out These Common Injuries Cashiers Face

Cashiers may receive on-the-job injuries that result from accidents, or from a combination of repetitive movements day after day and year after year. Whatever the case, they are typically painful and may actually prevent someone from working. Common inhuries include:

  • Arm injuries. Repetitive movements like swaying your arm back and forth to scan products can cause severe damage. Your shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands are all prone to experiencing pain, stiffness, and swelling as a result of the motion. Cashiers often develop carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, nerve damage, and even arthritis from the duties of their profession.
  • Disc problems. Standing and slightly bending all day puts a lot of pressure on the muscles, bones, and discs in your back. Overtime, the pain and stiffness can become too much, and even cause discomfort in your legs, feet, and neck. You may find that you can no longer perform your job duties because of the toll it has taken on your body.
  • Pinched nerves. Repeating the same movements, even if they seem harmless at the time, can cause damage to your nerves. For instance, nerves in your neck, arms, and hands can become compressed or “pinched,” leaving you with pain and discomfort.
