Personal Injury Help and Resources for Texas Accidents

Fatal accidents declined in 2009 from 34,172 to 30,797 (almost 11%) in the US according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Just in Texas that drop was 12%, 3,071 down from 3,476 in 2008.

What does this say about drivers? Are people being more cautious? Are drivers taking fewer risks such as driving drunk, eating, or texting while driving? Is technology a factor? Are cars safer? Are more people using Bluetooth devices?

The answer is likely a combination of all of these things.

In further breakdown of 2009, 53 percent of Texas traffic accident fatalities were drivers, 20 percent were passengers and anoth 13.9 were motorcyclists. In Texas 25-34 year olds had the largest percentage of fatalities.

The Fatality Rate per 100,000 Licensed Drivers for 2009 was under 20 (17.96) for the first time since records were first recorded in 2004. The overall trend has decreased over the years, but the families of the 30,797 lives lost just last year will agree that there is no cause for celebration yet.

As technology continues to advance and older cars are taken off the road, fatalities should continue to decrease. This however does not control behavior. When drivers chose to take more risks such as racing and running red lights they are not only risking their own lives and health, but those of everyone around them. Their passengers are in danger as well as other drivers and pedestrians.

Nowadays there are more PSA’s targeted to drunken and buzzed driving. It is not surprising that alcohol is the leading cause of traffic accident fatalities. Even with the knowledge and harsh consequences of DWIs many people still chose to drive buzzed and drunk every week.

Some accidnets are just that, and are unavoidable. The US as a whole is moving in the right direction, but as long as drivers contine to make bad decisions there will continue to be fatalities. The government can only do so much to discourage drunken driving. Each driver needs to take a personal accountability in order to put a stop to it.
