Where to Turn and What to Do When Your Free Legal Consultation Doesn’t Work Out

After you’ve been severely injured in an accident caused by negligence, it can be difficult to understand and pursue an injury claim. What do you do? Who do you turn to? Should you get a lawyer? All of these questions need to be answered and answered quickly.

Unfortunately, “Googling it” can only get you so far. Sure, you’ll find dozens of articles from various attorneys (like this one) which will attempt to address your concerns as best they can. Most of them will even go as far as to offer a free, one-on-one consultation to address the specific factors of your personal claim. But then what?

Say you take these firms up on their offers, and you schedule three or four interviews. You may get lucky and find the perfect attorney on your first try—some people do. What if you don’t? What if your free consultation turns out to be a waste of time and you leave without the representation you need?

At the Law Offices of Steve Lee, Attorney at Law, we feel that even though the consultation we offer is free, you shouldn’t leave empty-handed. Whether you accept or decline our counseling, or we turn your case down, you’ll still leave knowing your next move.

You Decide to Seek Another Attorney

What happens if you accept the offer of a free consultation, but during the review, you decide not to hire the attorney?

When deciding whether or not to pursue an injury claim, the most important thing to think about is representation. Every lawyer will tell you that having an experienced attorney on your side is paramount for a successful settlement. Well, here we go: Having an experienced attorney on your side is paramount for a successful settlement.

However, securing good representation from the start can do more than guarantee a strong claim, it can guarantee good advice. We’re the first to tell you that making sure you’re comfortable with your attorney is the first step toward a strong case. Not everyone is a great personality fit, no matter how hard he may try to win you over. That includes us. Therefore, we won’t take offense if you feel that we didn’t connect during our consultation. In fact, if you’re uncomfortable, just say so and we’ll give you the information you need to find a better fit. Remember, it’s your case, your life, and your settlement. You need to feel in control, safe, and comfortable with those who are representing you.

We Suggest You Seek Another Attorney

What happens when during the free consultation, an attorney decides he doesn’t want (or can’t have) you as a client?

Although we would never turn away a potential client who needs help, there are certain situations where we feel, in all good conscience, that we cannot take on a claim. The majority of these situations occur because we feel that by accepting the case we’ll do you an injustice.

The three most common reasons for client rejections are as follows:

  • Your claim is not strong enough to pursue a case. There are many factors of a claim that may make it inadvisable to pursue. Anything from lack of evidence to state restrictions on the value of your case can make a claim less than ideal. However, we’re honest and straightforward when it comes to your case. If we feel that your case is weak or don’t think you even have legal grounds to pursue a claim, we’ll tell you. We won’t waste your time by making you believe you have a case but we’re unable to help. Instead, we’ll give you the necessary information you need to decide whether or not to pursue your claim with another firm.
  • Your case is not in an area of the law that we often practice. We want to ensure that you have the best possible resources and counsel throughout your claim process—even if that means losing your business. If we aren’t comfortable with the area of practice in which your claim is focused, we won’t take the case. You deserve an attorney who is highly experienced in dealing with the intricacies and legal precedents of every aspect of your specific case. Although we may be familiar with the laws of your accident, we’re not comfortable taking a case where we aren’t confident in our ability for success. If that happens, we’ll try to point you to another law firm better suited for your needs.
  • All our attorneys are currently carrying a full caseload. There are times when we’re spread a little too thin to take on new clients. Therefore, we’re happy to schedule your consultation to discuss the validity of your case, but we may not be able to take the case ourselves. We feel that you deserve the complete attention of your attorney at all times. If we can’t provide that kind of individual focus to you, we won’t make you believe we can by taking your case.
