Maritime Heat-Related Injuries

Maritime workers frequently labor in hot and humid conditions, putting them at risk for heat-related illnesses.

This danger increases when an employee’s work entails heavy lifting, working in a confined space, or being weighed down with bulky equipment.

Heat Risk Dangers

Extreme heat stresses the lungs and heart, which may result in a medical emergency or serious illness. A variety of health risks are associated with heat exposure, including:

  • Heat stroke. Heat stroke is the most dangerous heat-related illness. It can occur suddenly, leading to loss of consciousness within minutes. Heat stroke prevents the human body from properly regulating core temperatures, and a victim is unable to sweat in order to eliminate excess heat. Symptoms are typically the same as those associated with heat exhaustion, but they may also include high body temperature, confusion, loss of consciousness, and seizures.
  • Heat exhaustion. The loss of excessive water and salt due to heavy sweating can lead to heat exhaustion. It typically develops gradually, and symptoms may include heavy sweating, headaches, nausea, dizziness, and excessive thirst.
  • Heat cramps. Maritime workers can experience muscle cramps due to the loss of fluids and electrolytes through sweat. These cramps typically occur in the legs, arms, or abdomen, are extremely painful, and are often accompanied by muscle spasms. Heat cramps may occur right away, or they might not begin until the work day has ended.
  • Prickly heat. This is a heat rash that occurs when sweat fails to evaporate from the skin. Prickly heat is characterized by clusters of irritating red bumps that are most commonly found on the neck and upper chest.
