Truck Drivers: The Most Important Etiquette Tip You Will Ever Receive

About a decade ago, mobile phones were seen more as a luxury rather than a necessity. However, at this point, approximately six billion of the seven billion people in this world own a cell phone—that is more than the amount of people who have access to a flushable toilet. It is great to see the world become more connected and digitally advanced, but these types of advancements usually come with negative sides as well.

One down side of such widespread mobile phone use is the lack of etiquette that many people display. Etiquette expert Jacqueline Whitmore noticed this growing issue and eventually decided to name July as National Cell Phone Courtesy Month. Her goal in founding this event was to encourage the increasingly unmindful corps of cell phone users to be more respectful of their surroundings.

Whitmore has released a large list of courtesy tips, and we feel one of her tips is a “must” for all truck drivers to read. In fact, it would be nice to see this posted in all trucking facilities across the nation throughout the month of July as a friendly reminder:

“Focus on driving. Practice wireless responsibility while driving. Don’t make or answer calls while in heavy traffic or in hazardous driving conditions. Place calls when your vehicle is not moving, and use a hands-free device to help focus attention on safety. Always make safety your most important call.”

This is truly important for all drivers, but even more so for truck drivers because if they lose control of their 18-wheelers while fiddling around with their cell phones, they can cause a serious amount of damage. There are far too many motorists on the road during the month of July, and truck drivers need to extend everyone the courtesy of respecting their right to a safe drive.
