FMSCA Creates Program to Encourage Truck Drivers to Wear Safety Belts

Everyone should wear seatbelts when riding in or operating vehicles, even truck drivers. Unfortunately, many truckers ignore the risks and take long journeys while unrestrained. The result is hundreds of deaths each year.

The problem with truck drivers not wearing their seat belts is so severe that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) oversees a program aimed at persuading truck drivers to buckle up when behind the wheel.

You Won’t Believe How Many Truck Drivers Don’t Wear Their Seatbelts

Truck drivers not wearing their seatbelts puts their lives at risk, in addition to others on the road. Consider the following statistics:

  • The FMSCA states that in a study conducted by the US Department of Transportation, 87 percent of passenger vehicle drivers wear their seatbelts, while only 84 percent of commercial truck drivers do.
  • In 2004, 303 of the 634 truck drivers who were killed in accidents were not wearing seatbelts.

Sadly, lives lost and people injured by not wearing belts is preventable. This is why the FMSCA, along with the Truck Manufacturers Association, the National Tank Truck Carriers, the Motor Freight Carriers Association, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, and other groups, promotes safety belt use by truck drivers through their Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Belt Partnership. The partnership asks truck drivers to set an example on the roads by wearing a seatbelt at all times and taking the safety belt pledge. The partnership also works together to promote seat belt education, conduct outreach programs, coordinate events that promote seatbelt safety belt use, and more.

When a Truck Accident Changes Your Life

Unfortunately, those who are involved in truck accidents end up with severe injuries. Medical bills can put them into debt, and injuries can prevent them from being able to work. If this happens to you, you’ll need the help of an attorney to fight for your rights. If not, you may end up paying these fees yourself, which isn’t fair.
