Texas Truck Accident Statistics

Texas is a really big state with really big vehicles, including numerous commercial trucks. While we depend on these trucks to transport cargo throughout the state, they’re sometimes involved in serious collisions.

The Texas Department of Transportation recently released cumulative motor vehicle crash statistics revealing interesting trends occurring between 2003 and 2017.

Texas Collision Trends

We take a look at the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of the latest Texas vehicle collision statistics:

The good. Traffic-related fatalities dropped throughout the state.

  • There were 3,721 deaths on Texas roadways in 2017, a decrease of 1.92 percent from the 3,794 deaths occurring during 2016.
  • Pedestrian fatalities are down significantly. There were 614 deaths in 2017, a 9.7 percent decrease from 2016.
  • Pedalcyclist deaths also declined. There were 57 fatalities during 2017, a 13.6 percent decrease from the previous year.
  • There were zero fatalities resulting from bridge collapses.

The bad. Texans were injured in numerous collisions.

  • There were 254,853 people injured in crashes during 2017.
  • One person was injured about every two minutes.
  • There were a total of 14,299 collisions resulting in serious injuries to 17,546 people during 2017.
  • Harris County truck collisions caused 143 serious injuries in 2017.

The ugly. Texas is still experiencing too many traffic fatalities.

  • There wasn’t a single deathless day on Texas roadways during 2017.
  • One person was killed every two hours and 21 minutes.
  • In 2017, there were 1,024 people killed in collisions with drunk drivers, representing 28 percent of total fatalities.
  • Harris County reported 47 fatalities resulting from truck collisions during 2017.

The Financial Impact of Collisions

The estimated economic loss from all Texas motor vehicle crashes grew by about 85 percent between 2003 and 2017. If you’ve been injured in a Texas truck collision, you’ve likely suffered some of these losses as well.
