I felt fine after a fender-bender a few days ago, but now I am seeing some strange symptoms. Is it too late to see a doctor?

After an accident, the adrenaline and shock of the event can often make the moment seem like a blur. If our bones are all in one piece and we are not bleeding, it is easy to assume that everything is fine.

Many people just get the other driver’s information and move on with their day, thankful to have escaped a worse fate.

Unfortunately, many head and soft tissue injuries take a while to manifest, especially with high amounts of adrenaline pumping through your body. As you are learning, however, just because you can walk away from a crash does not mean that you escaped unscathed.

If you have not already done so, go see your physician immediately. Not only is it in your best interest to get checked out, but the other driver’s insurance company may claim that if you waited too long to seek medical attention, your injuries must not be serious. Cover all your bases—both health and legal—by seeking medical treatment.

This is not an uncommon situation to be in, so as long as you are prompt in getting medical attention as soon as you notice your symptoms, your odds of getting compensation for your injuries are good. Whiplash is one of the most common injuries in “minor” car accidents, and the soft tissue damage or concussion symptoms can take several days to be noticeable. Just because you did not have these symptoms immediately does not diminish the severity of your injury, and you still have every right to compensation.

One very important thing to remember is that you must not sign a release from the other driver’s insurance company until you have been evaluated by your doctor. Anything you sign may take away your right to compensation, so be sure that you have a solid diagnosis of your injuries before putting pen to paper.
