The Truth About Older Drivers: Are They as Dangerous as You Hear?

Houston is known for being diverse. From its eclectic food to its varied ethnicities, this part of Texas has it all. Another thing Houston has in abundance is older drivers. In fact, the entire country has seen more senior motorists on the road than ever before. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 33 million people age 65 and older were licensed drivers in 2009, which was a 23 percent increase from 1999. Unfortunately, over 500 older adults are injured in auto accidents every day.

The Truth About Older Drivers

If you’re like many, you’ve heard that older drivers are extremely dangerous. From decreased vision to physical ailments, aging motorists supposedly have many issues that make them a hazard when driving, but are they as dangerous as they are made out to be? Consider the following statistics:

  • Fatality rates increase starting at age 75 and rise even more after age 80. This is likely due to pre-existing medical conditions, susceptibility to injuries, and medical complications. Physical and visual limitations are also often the reason this age group causes accidents.
  • Drivers 65 years of age and older are 16 percent more likely than adult drivers ages 25 to 64 to cause an accident. However, they are less likely than drivers under the age of 25 to get into an accident.
