Texas Pedestrian Vehicle Accident Statistics
Many Texans love taking advantage of long, sunny days with energizing walks. Sidewalks, crosswalks, and traffic signals are intended to protect pedestrians from oncoming vehicles, but devastating pedestrian accidents still occur far too often. The Governors Highway Safety Association issued a February 2018 report stating the number of nationwide pedestrian fatalities increased by 27 percent between 2007 and 2016.
Texas Pedestrian Accidents
Three of the top 10 counties for pedestrian fatalities are in Texas. Harris County had 128 deaths, followed by Dallas with 84, and Bexar with 68.
During 2016, Texas had 2.44 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents, and 80 percent of these accidents occurred at night. Texas is one of only five states reporting over 100 pedestrian deaths during 2017. Texas and the other four states—California, Florida, New York, and Arizona—were also responsible for 43 percent of all pedestrian fatalities in the United States during the first half of 2017.
Improving Pedestrian Safety
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is taking steps to improve pedestrian safety. The “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign uses public service announcements to highlight the dangers of walking while distracted or impaired. TxDOT is also working to make pedestrians safer by providing marked crosswalks, walk signals, and sidewalks. In addition, the “Be Safe Be Seen” pedestrian safety campaign stresses the need for drivers and pedestrians to remain visible and observe traffic regulations.
TxDOT provides Texans with reflective bags, safety maps, and community safety materials.
You Need an Attorney
If you’ve been involved in an accident with a motor vehicle while you were walking or jogging, you may be left with serious injuries. Some of the most common pedestrian injuries include fractures of the limbs, hips, and pelvis; spinal cord damage; concussions; and brain hemorrhages. You need a pedestrian accident attorney to help you receive the compensation you deserve.
