Receiving Compensation for Injuries Caused by a Roundabout Collision

Long used in Europe, roundabouts have become a common sight throughout the United States, even in the great state of Texas! Occasionally, though, even the most seasoned driver can be confounded by one of these roadways. Roundabouts are popular because they have proven safer than other types of circular intersections. According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety, converting intersections from traffic signals or stop signs to roundabouts reduced injury crashes by up to 80 percent, and all crashes by up to 47 percent.

Safely Navigating a Roundabout

Typical modern roundabouts have a circular central island with a circulatory roadway around it. One of the advantages of a roundabout is that, unlike a traffic circle, it doesn’t require traffic to stop if no other vehicles are present. Slow down when approaching a roundabout, and if the roadway is clear you may proceed. The most important rule of a roundabout is that you must yield to any vehicles already present when entering. If you’re approaching the roundabout at the same time as other vehicles, you must yield to the vehicle on your left.

Common Roundabout Accidents

Though roundabouts improve safety, accidents do still occur. Negligent and distracted drivers can make even the safest roads dangerous. While roundabout drivers typically avoid some types of serious accidents such as head-on and T-bone collisions, they are still at risk of injury. Common causes of roundabout crashes include:

  • Following too closely, failing to yield, or quickly braking to make an exit, causing a rear-end collision.
  • Sideswiping another vehicle while attempting a last-minute lane change.
  • Forcing another vehicle out of a lane and off the road.
  • Failing to yield when entering the roundabout.
